Evicted, an engrossing investigation of the crisis conditions in Milwaukee’s low income housing system, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize.
Evicted was the product of an incredibly rich survey of Milwaukee’s renters and Desmond’s in-depth interviews of low-income renters, information he collected while living in low income housing in Milwaukee for a year. It is rare to have a social issue studied with such meticulous, statistically rigorous social science data, yet still grounded in the day-to-day lives of ordinary people.
There is no comparable study on low income housing in any other city. Evicted is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the issues of poverty and housing throughout the United States.
